Tossing out ideas.

Hey, I'm one of you. Last month marked 17 years for me as a volunteer.
I'm an officer, president of the executive board and will be the town fire warden as soon as the state completes the forms. I'm fairy involved and throughly enjoy what it gives to my for enjoyment. Usually more than the grief!

A change of life came my way, divorce, house lost, death in the family, and I've been inspired to do something additional and different with some free time.

I was asked by a member to come up with a warning light for the hood scoop on her new Tacoma. Done.

A friend of mine is an engineer. He and I usually tinker on atvs, dumping out lots of horsepower. He builds stuff for fun, I try to as well but I'm not quite the electrical whiz that I could be.

We talked about this simple task. He threw out ideas for doing this….buying a light that could do it, or buying a high quality light and high jacking the unit and making it do what we want. we both realized something.

We could build a weatherproof warning light, selectable color, adjustable intensity, adjustable pattern, higher power leds than used in smaller lights. It would have a micro controller box, a reflector like the good led bars have, a well built harness and relay, and a good warranty.
He pulled pricing figures and we quickly realized we could build to order at a price that we could all afford. Especially for the features.

I know about the reliability, how it has to always work, or it gets trashed.

I'm seeking input from you guys. Name some other features that you'd like to see.
Throw them out there.

This isn't to make me rich, this is because we think it would be fun. It could be awesome to build something here that's quality, designed by ff/Ems, and something we can all afford.

So, lay it on me.

Yes. We are exploring patents, what's available, optic technology, legality, suppliers….if we get it off the ground, it will be legitimate. Nothing shady.

Mods, I hope this is allowed.

Asking for feedback from an interview

I had an interview about 2 weeks ago with a volunteer department, I wanted to get some feedback from the interview to see how it went (I am moving onto the next stage).

Its the first interview I have had in a long time, and I want to keep improving.

What do you think about contacting the deputy fire chief and asking for a bit of his time for feedback.

Thanks

Qualifications for Fire Dispatcher?

I dont know if I am even in the right subreddit but my city if hiring new communication operators for the fire department and it is a job I am interested in. I think it will get me closer to be part of the fire service. All I have is a 3 year diploma in Fire Protection Engineering Technology and they don't really list special qualifications required other than a high school diploma. What do you guys think can get you a job in this field?

Active Duty or National Guard

I am 20 years old and 1 year from graduating college. Upon graduation, I will commission as a 2LT in the ARMY. Being a firefighter is my dream job. My question is about my component selection as an officer.

If I choose active duty, I put a hold on firefighting for a minimum of 6 years, but I will get out free and clear to move on, should I choose. If I go National Guard, I can start working towards being a firefighter nearly right away. I don't know if anybody has any experience with these things, but it is something that I could certainly use input on.

Additional Details: I will have my FF1 and EMT-B certs by the end of this coming summer, and I will be with a local VFD until I graduate college.

Thanks

Some Changes, Please Read

What's up /r/Firefighting! I just wanted to take a few minutes to quickly discuss a couple of changes in the sub.

Firstly as you can tell, the look and feel of the sub has been completely revamped. Let me know what you think, and if you have any suggestions I'm all ears. I've heard both good and bad things about the scrolling banner, so to address this issue you will now find a button in the banner to turn the scroll on or off. Pretty snazzy, I know.

Second thing I want to address. Hit'n hard from the yard! Most of you have heard of this page, some of you haven't. If you haven't go check them out on Facebook! On that note, Facebook is where that shit stays. From here on out, any user who posts shit like "TYFYS" or refers to women as "slampigs" or anything that relates to Hit'n hard from the yard, WILL BE BANNED! That shit is on Facebook, and that is where it will stay. We have started seeing the sub getting hit with that kind of content, and this community will not fall to those standards. I take pride in the fact this sub is great for career and vollies alike to come and hang out and shoot the shit. For you trolls that think this is the perfect time to have fun with this new rule, don't bother. Automod will remove your comment before a soul lays eyes on it, and you will be permanently banned from this sub.

Anyways, that's all I got at the moment. If you guys have any suggestions for the sub in general leave them below and we will look into them.
